WEC: TOYOTA GAZOO Racing secures the FIA World Endurance Championship at Spa

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. World Endurance Championship. 6 Hours of Spa

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing secured the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) teams’ title in a dramatic and weather-affected Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the penultimate round of the 2018-2019 season.

Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso in the #8 TS050 HYBRID extended their lead in the drivers’ standings to 31 points with one race and 39 points remaining after their fourth win of a season which began with victory at Spa 12 months ago.

The #7 TS050 HYBRID crew of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López had controlled the race until just before half distance, setting the fastest lap as well, but then lost 11 minutes due to a sensor issue which dropped them to sixth at the end.

History was made in the opening laps when heavy snow hit Spa just a few minutes after the start; the first time that snow has affected a WEC race. Remarkably, racing continued for almost 30 minutes until conditions forced a safety car with Mike leading having started from pole position in the #7.

After 25 minutes, and now in bright sunshine, the race resumed with Mike leading from the #3 Rebellion. Sébastien, who had lost time in his pit stop, immediately took second place for the #8 and then moved into the lead at the end of lap 19.

Another safety car due to an accident a few moments later triggered drama for both cars. Sébastien was forced to make a fuel stop while the pit lane was closed and WEC regulations meant the team was allowed to add only five seconds of fuel.

Mike, who had used less fuel in the opening stint, was able to refuel normally and switch to slick tyres when the pit lane opened, while Sébastien made his regular fuel stop soon after, costing him around a minute and dropping him to 10th.

But an exciting race saw further action, with Sébastien using his slick tyres to great effect and battling up to second place by the time both cars pitted under a full course yellow around the two-hour mark, with Kamui taking over the #7 and Fernando the #8.

With almost three hours completed, the race took another dramatic turn when Kamui, who had been leading by around 50secs, experienced a sensor issue on the #7. He brought the car back to the pits where the pit crew worked quickly to rectify the issue and allow José to resume, now four laps behind and in 19th position.

Kazuki inherited the lead in the #8 but another snow flurry soon after saw both cars switch to wet tyres, which were ideally suited to conditions when a heavy hail storm struck with just under two hours remaining, bringing out the safety car again for around 25 minutes.

Entering the last hour, José had fought his way into the top six while Fernando stretched the #8 car’s advantage to over a lap at the front as more bad weather and another safety car arrived. The race finished a few minutes early when the red flags were waved due to the treacherous conditions.

Fernando was at the wheel of the #8 at the end to win by one lap from the #3 Rebellion and #11 SMP Racing, with Kamui bringing the #7 home in sixth, four laps behind after a valiant fight back. The team now heads to France for the season-ending Le Mans 24 Hours on 15-16 June.

Hisatake Murata, Team President: “Congratulations to everyone in the team on winning the World Championship; it is the reward for a lot of hard work over the past year. We faced a challenging race today. I am sorry for the #7 drivers; they all drove really well and it’s a pity they lost the chance to fight for the win due to the sensor issue. The #8 drivers also performed well despite misfortune; congratulations to them. Although such a dramatic race is not easy for the team, I hope the many fans as well as our colleagues from Cologne enjoyed the race despite the weather. Now we look forward to the climax of the season and a race we have been preparing for ever since June last year; Le Mans.”

Race: 1st, 133 laps, 9 pit stops. Grid: 2nd. Fastest lap: 1min 58.056secs

Sébastien Buemi (TS050 HYBRID #8): “A race win for us is very nice of course, but it was a tricky race with the conditions. I’m sorry for car #7 to have the issue when they were leading; it would have been difficult to catch them so they deserved better. We had some bad luck early in the race and I had some radio issues as well which didn’t help. It’s fantastic for the team to win the World Championship. Now we go to Le Mans with a bit of a margin in the drivers’ championship but we are taking nothing for granted. I am looking forward to a good, fair fight in Le Mans.”

Kazuki Nakajima (TS050 HYBRID #8): “It was a crazy race with crazy weather. We were quite lucky to win as it was very unfortunate for car #7; I feel sorry for them. We faced a few difficulties in these conditions so there are some lessons to learn so we are fully prepared for Le Mans. It is a great achievement for the team to become World Champions; that was the biggest target here and now we can celebrate a little bit. We are focused on Le Mans and we have to finish the job for the drivers’ World Championship. We know probably more than anyone how difficult that race can be.”

Fernando Alonso (TS050 HYBRID #8): “That was definitely not an easy race, with a couple of issues in the first part in addition to the weather. So the race was up and down in terms of emotions. The most important thing today was securing the teams’ World Championship. I am extremely happy for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing that we scored enough points to become World Champion; a massive well done for everyone in the team. It has been an amazing season for us and hopefully in Le Mans we can have the final, nice touch with the drivers’ title.”

Race: 6th, 129 laps, 8 pit stops. Grid: 1st. Fastest lap: 1min 57.394secs

Mike Conway (TS050 HYBRID #7): “It was one of those races; crazy weather with all four seasons in 10 minutes, then we ran into a technical problem and lost a few laps. Up to that point we had a nice comfortable lead, we were really quick and everyone was doing a good job. José and Kamui both drove great stints to try to make up some positions but with all the safety cars we had no chance to fully recover. So we got the best result available given the circumstances.”

Kamui Kobayashi (TS050 HYBRID #7): “It was a frustrating race for us because we had the car to win and everything looked good until we had the issue. It’s a pity but these things can happen and before that we’d had no technical issues this season. We did our best to recover and showed good performance but after losing so much time there was no realistic chance of the podium. Well done to car #8 on the win and of course a big congratulations to the team for securing the World Championship.”

José María López (TS050 HYBRID #7): “I actually don’t feel disappointed because we did everything we could. We showed that we were the quickest car and that is a nice feeling. We worked well, did everything we had to do and made no mistakes. Unfortunately it didn’t work out but this is endurance racing and it can happen. Congratulations to the team; one of the main goals is achieved. Congratulations also to car #8 for the win. We will keep our heads up and go for the big one now.”

Highlights from an action-packed brawl on the streets of Monte Carlo 💪 ... See Less

The thing about Gutiérrez is to consult with his psychologist, that the damages are not activated does not mean that you drive without respect, you cannot put the car where it does not fit, fantastic boot race, it was not the best circuit to debut in a virtual race and if He is not caught in the accident, he would have been in the top 3, I hope he dared to participate again, Lecler very clean.

No damage is bullshit. Grow up.

Gutierrez should play E roulette tonight. He hit everything else in Monaco, odds are he will hit his number or color as well

Turning damage off was a big mistake. Just became intentional wall riding for most. It somewhat disconnects risk and reward.

Can’t run this with damage on, just takes away the spectacle and not very interesting to watch when crashing into each other like this

That It!!! All the F1 Pilots (when they're driving For Real) still think they're in virtual cars which can bounce off of everything without damage!

So many people complaining, don't watch if it's so repulsive to you.

Some shocking driving there. And people wonder why very few take it seriously. Crank damage up to 100% and let's see them

Gutierrez is an absolute jerk and shouldn't be allowed to participate! He should go to a fair in Mexico and drive bumper cars...

I guess one way to get on the podium is to literally knock your opponents out

Hey F1. You should have a night race at Monte Carlo and just add lights. I think it would be pretty cool.

I feels like watching mini4WD series using barrier to turn lol Fun to watch, in not F1-serious like

Esteban Gutierrez driving was just shameful. I realize it's a video game... but even for a video game his driving was stupid.

Damage off? Ghost Cars? THIS IS STUPID!

No damage is just horrible, full of punts and wallriding

2020 Monaco Virtual GP Nobody: All the drivers: SEND IT IN EVERY CORNER

Oh this virtual thing is just lost. Loss of value in material, society and spirit. But who would compare?..

Action? Come on guys, activate damages, they are real drivers!

“He wants to play bumper car or something” - everyone to Gutierrez - 2020

F1 needs a no damage mode 😂

If they had damage on, only Russell would have finished the race 😀

Turn damage on for Christ sake will prevent a lot of the stupid driving and dive bombs

Must put damage on... it is a carnage going on there!

About the only way Williams will win anything lol.

Thats a joke Man... IRL that race over in the 1st lap.

Gutierrez ruined the race outcome. I expect that kinda bumper cars from nascar. I’d why I quit that series. Altho it sounds like it pleased some folks. Well, there’s always the real thing, and bikes. flat track, moto, and. Enduro’s. Something for everybody. Hope the next one is cleaner.

I would loooooove to get relevant F1 news without fantasy races and fluff. Is there a F1 page just for that? I realize everyone is struggling to stay relevant but fantasy racing is not what I signed up for.

Another Ferrari driver who can't handle being passed

Turn on damages. What a mess it look like kids driving today ...

Why has F1 not adopted Esports to carry the season until the real racing can continue? Would be alot more interesting to see all the grid in equal cars. Even if it's not exactly the real thing.

More exiting than real F1.. says enough!

It looks fake and it is...multiple collisions, no damage, no nothing. It’s just not interesting.

Enough of this. Bring back the real deal

Glad they made titanium front wings and sidepods.

Super unrealistic...

Do people look at this crap really only stockcar racing

Good old Karting move 👍

Never seen such racing in Monaco.

The fact these guys race with no damage is sad.

turn damage on so we can really have fun watching drivers survive monaco.

Is that Blackpool GP coz they drive like they were on the Dodgems?!

He went through where Max couldn't get past Hamilton last season

😮👏🏻 Good luck

I think they should have had damage on

Turn on the damage

Gutierrez is the Pagenaud of F1

100% Prost v Senna

Charles Leclerc was a bit GUTted! 😮 ... See Less

Comment on Facebook

Not watched this rubbish. They need to do a kind of battle royale style event where everyone has damage on, except kyviat and the last person to be torpedoed wins.

Bad luck for Charles on that point. Two years ago breaks failure and now this😂

Why are some people so angry on this thread because wheels didn't fly off a virtual car? Lockdown really hitting hard 😂

No damage... It's just a laugh that you need the settings for 5 year olds...

Honestly what Esteban today did was dirty... unacceptable, was watching Marcel Kiefer's stream and he was raging and swearing!

Just get to real racing already. This virtual racing wore out a month ago. NASCAR has started and IndyCar starts June 6th.

These clips only remind me how barren my life is without F1 lol. I can't find any enthusiasm for these Mario Kart races.

😐 c'mon now...turn on damage and get all the F1 drivers involved. Have your "celebrity" races elsewhere. ½points for virtual races and add them to whatever is earned when the actual season resumes.

Can we get a full contact death match mode with weapons please? Please!

Someone appears to have driven through Leclercs car, ghostlike, as if made of ectoplasm...

You have overdone it with the "virtual" grand Prixs.I am a gamer and a FORMULA 1 fan myself but just the marketing exaggeration and promotion of all these tends to become boring, at least for those who spend a lot of time with pure Formula 1 things.Even the the E-league was better organized...

If they're going to play a game with ridiculous physics and no damage, why don't they just play Call of Duty. That's about as close to real war as this F1 game is to car racing.

Alright, it's funny if everyone agrees to go full Mario Kart mode. Not if a couple decides to torpedoe everyone while the rest is actually trying ro race. Either implement some set of rules or just switch to Mario Kart for this series. It was funny, now it's just ridiculous.

What no damage. That the whole point of f1

Leclerc and Monaco is just not a good combination.

What a load of sh*te this is honest. May as well watch them all playing mario cart. Utterly pointless.

Here for all the ItS nOt ReAlIsTiC comments. No kidding, it's a video game.

The handling on the Codemasters games will always be rubbish, far from realistic, useless.

Get a grip ya whining bastards! Yes, there's a bit of overzealous driving...so what! It's a bit of fun and at least a little entertainment for us while there's no real F1.

it was the worst virtual gp please turn on damage

did the Alfa just phase through Leclerc's car??

Les mecs ils jouent sans les dégâts...trop la honte serieux quand nous on jouent en réel

also Esteban seems to be like five years child who chrashing into everything

They really need to mount guns and oil slicks and mix things up. 😜

Wow he even crash in virtual race.

Optimistic in 2018 to enjoying my soft pizza from bridgestone with mayonaise in the beach at sunset with coffee and gain cardio of my dogs just to funny 😆😆✌️

Gotta love that guy! 🤣 what if your cat finds out about that dog mishap?? 🙈 Also: pineapple on pizza is THE BEST! I’m sorry but it’s true 😝

Ahhhh - I got all of these right (except the mayonnaise on pizza but that’s definitely more acceptable than pineapple 🤢). Always makes me smile 😊 x

Vale you are really Amazing!!!! Good luck!!! We Love ❤💛 YOU!!!!

Looking forward to racing again . You look really good , relaxed & happy. You will always be No 1 . ❤ One kiss x

Always smiling our Vale !! and of course optimistic. I love him 🥰. I hope to see you soon on the track. 😉

Valentino looks like he needs that beard filling makeup pen that’s all the target on FB

My Boy, and no pineapple, I'm allergic. XX

Like the longer hair, not the beard... You can shave, you don't need the barber for that....

Only you were allowed to switch the tyres from Michelin to Bridgestone.. What a shame!

Maybe they should do this for all the riders????

FFS!! Enough of the fan-boy shite MotoGP!! 🤬 Let's see something about other riders. You have 82 others to choose from!

Mayonnaise on a pizza? In Italy? It must be an Uccio thing, there's no other explanation... 🤣🤣🤣

Pizza with mayonnaise??????

Hahahaha "forbidden." #pineappledoesnotbelongonpizza
