WSeries: British driver Jamie Chadwick crowned historic winner of inaugural W Series opening race in Hockenheim

May 4th 2019– British driver Jamie Chadwick, 20, stood on the top step of the podium at Hockenheim today to become the first ever W Series race winner. The pole sitter had to cope with strong opposition from the 17 other drivers in the first race of the first ever single-seater series for female drivers only, but she mastered the tricky conditions in what was a closely fought opening round to the six-race competition.

Very wet conditions in qualifying were a challenge for all the W Series drivers, but Bath-born Jamie was at the top of the time sheets for most of the 25-minute session, Fabienne Wohlwend (from Liechtenstein) claiming the other front-row starting position and another Brit, Sarah Moore, third on the grid.

As weather conditions improved ahead of the race and the 18 cars lined up behind the start-line, nerves were understandably kicking in for all the drivers, but they did not show it. Jamie made a perfect start to lead the field; however, a brake issue for her at the hairpin gave Sarah a window of opportunity to steal the lead, which she duly did. Then, still on lap one, a collision at Turn Six resulted in Megan Gilkes (CAN) and Emma Kimiläinen (FIN) retiring and the Safety Car being deployed so that their damaged cars could be moved out of the way.

Then all eyes turned to Alice Powell (GBR) who climbed from P6 to P2, creating an exciting Brit-versus-Brit-versus-Brit battle at the head of the field. But Jamie fought hard to restore her lead, Alice hot on her heels in second and Marta Garcia (ESP) storming through to third, a line-up that then continued all the way to the chequered flag.

Behind that three-way battle there were some great fightbacks, several drivers making up places from lowly starting positions, among them Tasmin Pepper (RSA), who drove from 16th to eighth; but Miki Koyama (JAP) drove even more forcefully, moving from 17th on the grid to seventh at the flag, not only setting the fastest lap of the race but the second-fastest too, just 0.001sec slower than her best.

Catherine Bond Muir, W Series Chief Executive Officer said:

“After a huge amount of hard graft by the W Series team – a small band of dedicated and talented individuals whom I’m proud but humbled to work with – it was truly emotional to see our 18 cars line up on the Hockenheim grid this afternoon.

“What then followed was a brilliant race, full of wheel-to-wheel action all the way down the field. Jamie led from pole, but I was impressed to see Sarah quickly wrest the lead from her. At the Safety Car restart Jamie reasserted herself, and the battle for victory then became a two-car fight between her and Alice. They both drove extremely well but Jamie judged things perfectly to hold on to win, and I was delighted to see one of our youngest drivers, 18-year-old Marta, finish third – her first podium finish in a single-seater race.

“Did W Series make history today? Some people have been kind enough to use those words, but it isn’t for me to say. What I will say, though, is that today was a great day for women in motorsport and women in sport, and there will be more such days to come, starting at Zolder [Belgium] in two weeks’ time.”

Dave Ryan, W Series Racing Director said:

“I don’t have a lot to say, but I do want to say this: I’ve had a lot of highlights in my racing career, but today is right up there.

“It was a superb race, everyone did a brilliant job, and congrats to them all.

“Next up: Zolder!”

Jamie Chadwick (UK), P1

“The win feels great. Going into the race, the conditions were tricky which made things a bit more difficult but off the back of qualifying and the back of yesterday, I really was pushing to get the first win.

“Losing the lead to Sarah caught me out a bit. I couldn’t get the car stopped at the hairpin and had a bit of an issue where I couldn’t get down the gears but, when the Safety Car went back in, I knew I had a good opportunity get the lead back and win.”

Alice Powell (UK), P2

“It’s great to be back on the podium especially given how the weekend started for me.

“The free practices didn’t really go to plan and I struggled a bit with the car so I knew that I really had to get a good start.

“Then, after that, I was strong through the fast corners and that’s where I tried to maximise my performance, open the gap and retain my second place.”

Marta Garcia (ESP), P3

“It feels really good to be on the podium. My performance yesterday was not so good but this morning I really felt that I improved in the wet which meant I started the race from P5.

“My start was good, I was fast throughout the race, and I’m really happy with how I did.”

What a race it was brilliant and exciting Max is so exciting to watch

Interlagos has always produced a great race since it’s current version was first used in 1990. Can only imagine how the 2017 onwards cars would’ve looked/performed on the original 5 mile layout, used between 1973-1980

Still think HAM should have kept 3rd place. ALB left the door wide open, realised it and tried to make up for his mistake and close it. Turned in too late and got it wrong!

When Riccardo hit Magnussen Martin Brundle blamed Ricciardo (which was correct) But when Hamilton tried a similar move on Albon Brundle blamed him for leaving the door open 🤔

Fantastic to hear the comments on Max from a UK channel, they understand and accept his dominance in this sport. If you listen closely they even make it look if there own countrymen Lewis is really no match when both drivers have an equal car. #independentskysports

Not even in the highlights Carlos is shown

Best 10-15 laps in F1 I have seen during last 20 years. Purely awesome.

One of the best races in 2019 ❤️

Would be an even better watch without David Croft shouting at everything.

Everyone noticing vettel-leclerc move, but did anyone notice leclerc-norris one at the end of first lap ? What if Norris didn't move ?

Best race of the decade! Best of Max!

On the coming days max is gonna be the strongest one from anyone

Brilliant driver Max Verstappen

Honda Power ! 👊

Disaster for Ferrari...

What is Kubica and Williams hurrying FOR??? LOL!

Leclerec vettel 😡😡

Oh Max !! We need more of you!

I was fortunately there to see that historic win by petruix. I will never forget the crowd and how wild they went 😁

Two for the price of one. Cheeky, but a nice move.

I have the entire 2019 season recorded and am sitting here watching the Catalunya race as I type. Mugello was a great race, well done Danilo!!

20 year dream was supposed to be coming true right now! 😭😭😭

Is that it... And nobody else has ever passed two riders in one move. Happens early laps, mid pack, every other race.... Move on

One of the best wins ever!

Great race 👌🏁

what an exciting moment!

Bashed poor old dovi( who was being an old woman b t w) out and stuffed the maggot well and truly, if that happens in every race, by any rider(even his bro) my legs will ache from jumping up and down and my throat WIll be sore from shouting approval, and the neighbour's will think I've flipped

Do we have a date set for the first live race of 2020 yet?

I've been trying to sign up for months now, yet it refuses to accept my payment information. Says I'm missing information, but all fields are correctly filled out. I would like to watch some racing.

So, we've been home for weeks due to this covid-thing and now when we all can go back to work we get a free month? Talking about a missed opportunity...

Il be all over this when it comes to the UK, cannot wait for the sky sports dictatorship to end!!!!

How do you watch live races in the US? This was to be our first season following F1, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be! I was hoping to pay for a legitimate service instead of steaming races.

It would be great if it was easy to watch F2/F3 through your service.

I’m still waiting for that cast button, or for a app for tv ... I can’t watch racing on a phone !

How can it be a good deal if you’ll have only 2 hours of free access for out of 1400 hours it will only last for 30 days ... lol It must be a joke right? 🤣🤣🤣

I paid for 1 month last oct and they continued to bill me monthly thru the off season for 3 more months. They refuse to reply to my emails. Don't get ripped off

What are the terms and conditions? Any restrictions based on location?

Still no Apple Tv/ Android Tv apps...

So for those of us who paid the full year access membership the day before Australia was canceled, what do we get?

So people have to pay their tv companies to watch f1 (Sky, movistar etcetc) and then also pay you guy for exclusive content 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

It s shame that the app has a huge pottential, yet you cannot cast it on tv. Also pay a huge attention when buying in on your tablet, since a lot of tablets are not supported by the app 😞

I paid the annual sub for no reason

Once you get the right to broadcast live in the uk I'll sign up...

Its not clear, can you watch the live races with this or is it only previous material?

Been charging me for nothing

Will pass

Ferrari c fini 🤣🤣🤣🤣
