Abu Dhabi: Yas Marina Circuit reveals track layout for the opening round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Yas Marina Circuit revealed the stunning track layout for the opening round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy on April 5-6.

At an official opening ceremony, Muhammed ben Sulayem, a 14-time FIA Middle East Rally champion and president of the Automobile and Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates, was given the honour of completing the first laps of the track at wheel of the GRX Taneco RX2 car.

World RX drivers Oliver Bennett of Xite Racing was joined by GRX Taneco trio Niclas Gronholm, of Finland, Russia’s Timur Timerzyanov and Reinis Nitiss, of Latvia, to provide passenger rides for local media and VIPs.

The purpose-built 1.2 kilometre rallycross circuit comprises 63 per cent asphalt and 37 per cent gravel, a series of wide tarmac areas, tight turns including a hairpin and a daunting jump section.

Briton Bennett, who had a taste of the circuit today in his World RX Ford Fiesta Supercar, said: “It’s brilliant to bring World Rallycross to such a spectacular venue as Yas Marina and to the people of UAE.

“The track is awesome. It has a lot to offer with big, wide tarmac turns which is going to be great for overtaking. It is going to be a tough track to race but it’s going to be fun to watch.

“We’ve done a lot of work on the car, I’m feeling really comfortable with it and I hope to be pushing for some high places during the championship this year.”

Yas Marina Circuit will be transformed into a three-day festival featuring an Adrenaline Zone, food trucks and international artists performing at an after-race concert.

Speaking at the official opening, Paul Bellamy, Senior Vice President of IMG Motorsports, the FIA World Rallycross Championship promoter, said: “We are delighted to be bring the FIA World Rallycross Championship to motorsport fans in the UAE for the very first time. I can think of no better venue to showcase our sport than the stunning Yas Marina Circuit.

“Here at Yas Marina Circuit for the opening round of the 2019 championship next month, there will be a mixture of world-class rallycross and music artists, a non-stop programme of racing and interactivity, along with fabulous food.

“This festival model mirrors our highly-successful SpeedMachine weekend we first introduced at Silverstone for the British round of the championship in 2018. Just like Silverstone, we are sure this fusion of motorsport and entertainment at Yas Marina Circuit will be a must-visit event next month and in the years ahead.”

Al Tareq Al Ameri, CEO of Yas Marina Circuit, added: “Yas Marina Circuit is always innovating when it comes to hosting thrilling motorsport races that attract fans and entertainment seekers to Abu Dhabi and FIA World RallycrossChampionship is the latest in our portfolio of world-class events.

“Our new track and weekend-long itinerary of some of the wildest racing the Middle East has ever seen promises to deliver something unique to the circuit.”

“With something for every member of the family, the weekend promises to be another must-do weekend packed with a host of on and off-track entertainment.”

Gosh, that livery is amazing. LOVE the helmet!

Hate it when you do this, he has 1 podium and now all eyes are on him so he is gunna feel a mountain of pressure and if he fails that's the end of his career you guys got to stop making a big deal so early all the time what if he can't take the pressure of everyone focused on him 😒

Us American fans can only hope. It’s been a long time since the golden age of American riders that I grew up watching.

Is he reading that out for someone coz this guy couldn't control a shopping kart

I used to love this driver, great talent but now he’s just unpredictable driver.

Karim: "Being able to CRASH a 700kg, 1000 horsepower car only with your hands and your feet is... it's the best thing" - we hear you, Romain Grosjean"

Of course I can't drive as well as Grosjean, but I can still differ a good race driver from a bad one.

Not the best driver, but a generally good guy.

Ah the hate and cheap jokes on Romain Grosjean. I bet the majority of the haters here can’t even ride a tricycle without going flat on their faces! Get a life, kids.

The problem is you are not good enough. You crash even under saftycar rules.

Since the 2020 F1 season is pretty much cancelled, Grojean took on a warehouse job..

The problem is there Romain you can't control a 700 kg car with 1000 horsepower, Mr Gunter has had enough of you and Kevin 🤣

His best season to date was 2013, when he was team mate to Räikkönen at Lotus. Got 6 podiums and 7 other points finishes, but since 2014 his career’s been very inconsistent

Yeah takes a special kind of talent to spin a car in pit lane and end up facing the wrong way.

Just exactly what the hell is left to control the car with? Is there a lesser-known control system that uses, exclusively, ear muscles, armpits, and hip flexors?????

Ironically from the driver who tends not to control his car! 🙄🤔

But he can’t control it lol. Poor romain. Give me the wheel I’ll show you 🙃

Wreck it Roman, coming to a safety barrier near you

Grosjean and car handling? April Fools, I got it.

Ironically the only F1 driver who can’t control a 700kg 1000hp car 🤔

All the expert race car drivers on this post 😂🤣😂🤣 Yeah, Grosjean isn't the best, but he's certainly better than all you facebookers knocking him 😉

To whomsoever it concerns, he has 10 podium finishes to his name!!

Goes to show what you think you can realise, no matter how far-fetched! Just look at Romain Grosjean.... An F1 driver.... Still... Wow...

‼️It’s super cool as long as he doesn’t crash into another😬😅‼️

Too bad there are no racing series like that...

“Being able to control.”

well, he is the one who "can" control it the least from all the grid 🙂

Best season for Grosjean. He didn’t crashed in any race so far.
