F1: Lewis Hamilton lifts his fifth World Championship in Mexico

Lewis wins his fifth World Championship and seals the fifth consecutive Drivers’ title for MercedesAMG Petronas Motorsport

  • In his 226th Formula One race – all of which have been powered by a Mercedes-Benz engine – Lewis claims his fifth FIA Formula One World Championship and becomes one of only three drivers who have won five or more championships, after Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher
  • Lewis finished today’s Mexican Grand Prix in P4
  • Valtteri set the fastest lap of the race and finished in P5
  • Lewis (358 points) leads the Drivers’ Championship by 64 points from Sebastian Vettel (294 points) – an unassailable lead with two races remaining in the 2018 season
  • Valtteri (227 points) is in P4 with 50 points remaining to be scored in the 2018 season
  • MercedesAMG Petronas Motorsport (585 points) lead Ferrari (530 points) by 55 points in the Constructors’ Championship with 86 points still to be scored in the 2018 season

When Lewis Hamilton crossed the finish line yesterday to be crowned FIA Formula One World Champion for the fifth time in his career, not only the team at the race track in Mexico celebrated. Many Daimler employees in Germany and around the world had watched the race on TV, keeping their fingers crossed for their colleagues at the track. One of them was Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

“This was one of the most epic race weekends I can recall,” said Dieter Zetsche. “It’s rare that one gets the opportunity to watch up close when athletes become legends and teams truly seal to become the absolute best in the world. That’s what just happened.”

Lewis Hamilton -Honestly, it’s very hard to realise it at the moment. It’s something I dreamed of, but I never in a million years thought I’d be standing here today a five-time World Champion. I never knew that was going to happen and I am just so grateful to everyone who has helped me be here. I want to say a big thank you to all the fans here for making the Mexican Grand Prix as special as it is. And I want to say a big thank you to my team. Bono said on the radio – the Championship wasn’t won here, it was won through a lot of hard work and through a lot of races.

So, I am so grateful for all the hard work back home, for PETRONAS, for all our partners and ultimately for Mercedes. I have been with Mercedes since I was 13, so to achieve the same thing Fangio had done with Mercedes so many years ago, is an incredible feeling and very surreal at the moment. The race itself today was pretty horrible. I got a great start and was really working my way up, but then we were really struggling with the tyres, both Valtteri and I. I was just trying to hold on and bring the car home. Honestly, I am just so grateful. To my family back home, I love you, thank you for all the support. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all the hard work my dad did and my family. This is a very humbling experience!

With his latest title, Lewis becomes one of only three drivers who have won five or more championships in Formula One, after Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher. All three played an important role in the racing history of Mercedes-Benz. Fangio’s name is almost synonymous with the historic era of success for the Silver Arrows in the 1950s. In 2010, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher came back from retirement to race for Mercedes, providing invaluable experience to the team. When he decided to retire three years later, Lewis took over his seat at Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and has since won four drivers’ championships and four constructors’ championships with the team.

2018 Mexican Grand Prix, Sunday – Wolfgang Wilhelm

“With this result, Lewis punched his well-deserved ticket to join that super exclusive club of just three drivers who’ve won five or more Formula One titles. I feel extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and work with all three of them at Mercedes-Benz. Each of those drivers dominated an era in motorsport – in his own way. Each is a very special personality and great athlete.”

Lewis has long been one of the most successful drivers in Formula One. He has scored more pole positions than any other F1 driver and he is second on the all-time list of race wins, behind only Michael Schumacher. Lewis also holds the record for most races with a single engine manufacturer, having started every single one of his 226 Formula One Grands Prix with a Mercedes-Benz engine.

“With Lewis joining our team the most recent era of Mercedes success in motorsport began – now crowned by five drivers’ world championships in a row for the team, four of them with Lewis. Even as the success grew, Lewis never stopped pushing himself to get even better. And so did the team, again and again. It’s incredible what they have achieved and how far they have come thanks to tremendous passion, hard work and a lot of outstanding expertise.”

Bien trabajo muchacho.. felicitaciones

Well done Fabio.World champion of the future.

And his bike has less rpm than the other Yamaha’s. I would like to see him be upgraded to be equal with the other m1’s!

Bravo Fabio l’unico a tener testa al mostro MM .. ti meriti la moto ufficiale.

This man is unbelievable, future champ for sure, but ride of the weekend is surely tossi going from 13th to 10th, then crashing out and blaming the braking, how will MotoGP survive after he’s gone without his cheating, without his treating fans and marshals like shit, and without giving everyone a good laugh embarrassing himself getting whipped by the satellite bikes, (and whipped by uccio at night) 😂😂😂😂

Yesss 🥳👌🏼

Boring season marq thing MotoGP fan happy ?? So wrong MotoGP fans not happy

Hasnul Marzuki

Se ficar com a motocicleta principal ganha o campeonato próximo ano.

Another top talent in the making for me

For a moment i tought i missed a race. My heart skipped!

What a race, super Max!

Can’t wait for the race. Mexico is a great track. I just hope the bulls can make some magic and Ferrari with their pace can give us some fun

good 2018 was circuit green 😀 .. This year Leclerc will very enjoy the track 🚀💪 wishing luck for Renault they was so bad luck 🤞

Nevermind. Let them happy this year. Next year will be year of Lecrec 😙

Guys, next Monday Will be the last day for me on Facebook, coz I Will be travelling to England on Tuesday to study Law. Will be there for four years. I'll miss you all so much. May God be with you all. Please forward this message to all those know me. I've just forwarded as I received it and I don't know who is travelling.

Gosh I miss those days already and it's only been a year

That was outstanding. How could anyone hate this man Hamilton??? He’s amazing!!!

God watching this makes my heart break for Danny Ric even more 😭 Just could not catch a break

🖤I Love U Guys🖤

And the fifth title 😍😍

So what did Will Smith taught Hamilton? 🤔🤔🤔

This year and that's gonna be it for Mercedes and Hamilton.

since 2014 the FIA Mercedes team is winning all titles , nothing is new

People seem to forget it was down to vettel ferarri lost

Must feel good becoming champion again with a far superior car for years and f1 easier than ever less demanding tracks overtaking assist computer assisted cars no wonder kids are filling the grid

You won't see Red Bull overtaking Ferrari on the straight this year, that's for sure.

Lewis: P4 Will Smith: "That's how you do it" lol

Julian Meert blijft mooie start

I’m a top fan here too Sergej Petrov

Me too!

I love this circuit. Go Max!

My favorite driver as a person. He deserved a better car than a Renault

Absolutely stunning! And the radio message sums it up perfectly 🤙

Great lap indeed !!! But im here to show the badge 😎😎

Great driver, always enjoy watching him. I was surprised how much the car was bottoming out on the lap, never paid attention to that before

I was soooooo happy when he did this. Max just wasn't fast enough and Vettel still youngest pole sitter 😂😂😂😂😂

And Austin Texas Grand Prix???

wou finally a great brand opens its eyes to the great corridor that is ricciardo 🏎🏎

This was just a fucking tragedy of a weekend, pole to yet another mechanical dnf. Thanks for all the broken engine components RB. They call that particular move the Horner Special.

Daniel will always be one of my favourite drivers.

Really miss seeing ricciardo at the top

Won’t be doing that this year. Sadly. Such a bad move.

Feel bad he moved from red bull deserves so much more of a better car. Would love to see him in a silver arrow

Last sector is one of the trickiests of all the circus... brilliant drive by Dani!

Will he ever experience these highs again, I’ve been a little deflated with the f1 thing this year because of this Renault thing, damn you max

Long straight will provide the advantage for Ferrari. Medium and slow corners would be Red Bull and Mercedes territory. Will be fascinating race.

Interesting to see how this year's Renault engines will cope with the Mexican altitude, last year they seemed the most efficient in the Red Bull car but who knows, just wishing for a Danny Ric podium again

Poor max almost cried after that one. I’m sure he did behind doors on his daddy’s shoulder. 😭

He's a great competitor ,Ferrari should hire him for next year to be in front againd

I don’t know anyone who does not like this guy. He’s fast and has amazing race craft. Its a wonder why he isn’t in a top team as the number 1 driver 🤔

Is this the pole he robbed crashy and Jos of their record?

all to give it up in the first `10 meter the next day

Jenson Button made the claim that Max was the quickest driver ever in F1 history yet Danny Ric had 3 poles while partnered with Max and Max had none This isn’t a dig at Max who I like a lot but a dig at how much shite Buttons talks

I miss Daniel Ric in the Red Bull plus the names of the tyres. These days tyre names are so boring.
