Qatar: Opening round of FIM MX1 / MX2 World Championship set for Doha this weekend
Doha, Feb 25th 2013 – The countdown for the start of the new season of the 2013 FIM MX1 / MX2 World Championship has started for the opening Championship round at Losail Motocross Track.
For first time ever a Motocross World Championship will be organized in the Middle East, with Losail’s Motocross track the venue in Qatar. This venue choice will be historical due to its location and that it will be the first time in all the FIM MX1 / MX2 World Championship history that it occurs under floodlights.
According to the Provisional Entry lists released from Youthstream, a total of 25 riders in the MX1 category and 33 riders of the MX2 category will participate in the Qatar round.
All spectators will have the opportunity to see the defendant MX1 World Championship rider, Antonio Cairoli of the Red Bull KTM Factory team flying over the Losail jumps. The Italian rider Cairoli is six times World Motocross Champion, 4 times in MX1 and 2 times in MX2 with 54 Grand Prix victories.
Cairoli knows the importance of having the FIM World Motocross Championship played out all around the World and expects that this new race venue will attract a lot of attention for the sport.
“For sure I am looking forward to Qatar a lot. I have never been, but I love to travel and see new things. I hope they made a nice track for us, and I am sure it will be a nice race.” Cairoli reported in a recent interview.
In the MX2 category, the defendant world championship rider, Jeffrey Herlings from Netherlands will be also present in the Qatar round. The Dutchman, also from the Red Bull KTM Factory, has 16 Grand Prix victories to his name.
Regarding wild card riders for the Qatar round, four riders that joined the previous round of the Losail MX Championship will have the opportunity to ride closer with the motocross champions.
The Kuwaiti riders Moaath Al Ansari and Mishary Shibah will join the MX1 World Championship whereas Abdulla Al Shatti from Kuwait and Hassan Ahmed from Bahrain will participate in the MX2 category.
The lenght of Losail MX track is 1,69 kilometres with a width of 10-12 metres. There are 16 turns and 18 obstacles of different distances and difficulties that for sure will guarantee a great spectacle to all the fans and spectators.
Track activity will start on Friday 1st March at 17:00 with the Free Practice for MX2 category and at 17:45 for the MX1 category.
Pre – Qualifying Practices will be at 19:15 and 20:00. Qualifying races are scheduled at 22:00 and 23:00.
On Saturday, MX2 World Championship race 1 is at 19:10 and for MX1 category the race 1 is at 20:10. There is a new race format for this year and both categories will ride together in the MX1/MX2 World Championship SUPER FINAL, at 23:10.
A part from the FIM MX1/MX2 World Championship, there will be also the second round of the Losail MX Championship as a support race during the weekend.
For the riders taking part at the Losail MX championship, the track activity starts on Friday at 13:30 with Free Practice and Race 1 at 15:00. On Saturday the Losail MX riders will dispute a second Race also at 15:00.
Tickets are available at the Villaggio Mall and during the 2 days event at the ticket booths at the Losail International Circuit. The ticket price for both days is 100 Qrs and children under 11 years old have free entrance. During both days there will be a traditional tent next to the grandstand with traditional hospitality and entertainment.
