Omani star Ahmed Al Harthy relishing return to Porsche Supercup at Silverstone

Ahmad Al Harthy looking forward to Silverstone in support of the British Formula 1Grand Prix this weekend Jul 7th/8th

Mon, Jul 2nd 2012 – Ahmad Al Harthy will proudly fly the flag for Oman on one of the biggest motor racing stages of all at Silverstone in Northamptonshire this weekend, 7th/8th July, when he makes a welcome return to the FIA Formula One World Championship supporting Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

The 30-year-old, driving as always for the Oman Air Racing Team, is one of eight regulars from the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship being granted an entry into the British Grand Prix support race at the Midlands track.

Ahmad, who is backed by Oman Air, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Oman Ministry of Tourism, Nawras, National Bank of Oman and Muscat Eye Laser Centre, raced for the first time in the Supercup this time last year at Silverstone but an unfortunate mechanical problem led to retirement.

On his return to the F1-supporting series this coming weekend, the dominant leader of the Pro-Am 1 Class in the British championship has high hopes of delivering a strong performance but is realistic about the huge challenge awaiting him.

“I’m really excited about racing in the Porsche Supercup again”, said the Muscat driver, “Last year we didn’t have a chance to learn too much because of a problem with the timing belt at the start of the race. This time, I’m hoping for a problem-free run and determined to do as well as we can.

“This is such a fantastic opportunity to learn from guys who have been racing on the world stage for a long time, plus it’s going to be amazing being part of a Formula One weekend again. We know this will be a huge challenge, the level of competition is immense, but we’re aiming to do Oman proud.”

This weekend’s event at Silverstone will mark Ahmad’s third competitive outing at a Formula One event. Added to his previous Supercup experience in 2011 the Omani ace contested – and won – the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East support race at last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

So far this year in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship, Ahmad has finished on the Pro-Am 1 podium in all 10 rounds and has taken six superb victories, the most recent coming just over a week ago at Croft in North Yorkshire.

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup practice will get underway at 17.00 on Friday, 6th July, with qualifying following at 11.25 on Saturday, 7th July. The race will then take place on the morning of the British Grand Prix itself, Sunday, 8th July, at 10.45.
