Abu Dhabi, UAE. 3 Feb 2011: Halfway through the heavily contested UAE GT-C Championship, first year runners Sayel Racing stand at an impressive 2nd place with 19 points, behind Team Gulfsport and ahead of NFS Racing in the team championship standings, and in 3rd place in the drivers’ championship standings.
With intentions to utilize their first season participating in the UAE GT Championship as a learning experience, the team is very pleased with their current standing.
“Developing myself, the team and our car was our first priority when joining the UAE GT Championship.” said team driver Saad Salman. “We were fortunate and had a couple of podium finishes, and that’s down to a collective effort from the team at Sayel Racing and the great work from AUH Motorsport who are running our car.”
Asked on whether their current position in the championship will push them to change priorities and focus on securing more points for Sayel Racing, Salman replied “We would of course like to keep doing what we’re doing and have another one or two podium finishes, but in order to do that I don’t believe getting too ambitious about points is the way to go about it. If we stick to our initial plan of developing ourselves as a team, I think that will reflect on our overall results in the end.”
The young team stresses the importance of promoting Palestinian culture and heritage at every race they participate in, with more tributes planned for the coming half of the season.
“Our tributes have proven to be a success amongst spectators and teams alike. It differentiates us from other teams and we feel it’s a good way to attract a wider scope of people to motorsport in the UAE. We look forward to other teams promoting their passions outside the realm of motorsport at the races as well.” said team coordinator Sima Farouki.
The next race will take place on the Yas Marina Circuit on the 11th and 12th of February in a support race to the Australian V8 Supercars, where Sayel Racing will hope to recreate more of the same successes they enjoyed in the first half of the season.
