Omani Al Harthy just misses podium at Croft
Oman’s Ahmad Al Harthy finished within just half a second of the Pro-Am 1 Class podium at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire this afternoon, Sunday, 20th June, during the 10th round of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship. Bouncing back superbly from a disappointing retirement during the first of the weekend’s races, caused by a highly unfortunate sensor failure which led to a misfiring engine, the Redline Racing driver composed himself impressively for the second encounter and produced a superb effort.
Lining up fourth in class at the beginning of round 10, Ahmad made a good start and ran strongly throughout the 15-lap race with great pace – his best lap of 1m25.222 seconds actually quicker than the fastest managed by third placed Pro-Am 1 finisher Tony Gilham and within nine 10ths of a second of the best posted by class winner Ollie Jackson.
During the closing stages, the 28-year-old from Muscat pressurised Gilham hard but there just wasn’t a way by and he had to settle for fourth in Pro-Am 1, a mere 0.516 seconds adrift at the chequered flag. The points scored today mean the Oman Air, National Bank of Oman, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs and Brand Oman-supported racer remains fourth in the class driver standings. “Race one was very unfortunate, just a problem with a small sensor which meant we had the misfire and that forced the retirement”, said Ahmad, “I’m not disappointed though because it’s motorsport, you can get an electrical or mechanical issue at any point. The important thing is that you compose yourself for the next race and come back strong, which we did in race two.
“I drove a good race and I’m pleased with the pace we had, I didn’t take any risks and I came very close to being on the Pro-Am 1 podium again. Aside from the race one problem, it’s been another strong weekend where we’ve made good progress. We have a long summer break before the next event but hopefully we’ll be able to keep our momentum going and improve some more.” The Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship now heads into a seven week hiatus with the 11th and 12th rounds of the season kick-starting the second half of the campaign at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk over the weekend 7th/8th August.
