UAE: Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi receives FIA Cross-Country World Cup trophy for 2WD category
Dubai – In presence of H.E Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Romaithi,
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for Sports, The
Abu Dhabi Racing driver, Sheikh Khalid bin Faisal Al Qassimi, today
received the FIA Cross-Country World Cup trophy for the 2WD category for
drivers and teams on behalf of Abu Dhabi Racing at the Dubai Sports
Council HQ in Dubai Design District.
The FIA trophies were handed over to Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi by Mohammed
Ben Sulayem, Vice President of the International Automobile Federation (FIA),
President of the ATCUAE and president of the UAE Motorsports Federation. The
event was also attended by the Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports
Council, H.E Arif Hamad Al Awani along with a host of VIPs and media
Al Qassimi was thrilled to receive such a prestigious award. “It is a great honour
for us to win the world title of the FIA Cross-Country Rallies. Such achievements
are very important to us in Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Racing.
“Our start in the cross-country rallies during the last season was excellent and we
managed to achieve full points behind the wheel of the 2WD Peugeot 3008 DKR. I
am very happy with this great achievement,” Sheikh Khalid said.
“I would like to thank H.E Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Romaithi and
Mohammed Ben Sulayem for presenting the trophies to me. I also would like to
thank Dubai Sports Council for hosting the event and Abu Dhabi Sports Council
for the support.
“I dedicate this achievement to The President of the United Arab Emirates, His
Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Sheikh
Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy
Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces,” he added.
“This title gives us a big boost and an important dose of confidence and
determination to pursue our mission in Abu Dhabi Racing and to achieve more
and represent our beloved country in various motorsport events all over the world,”
Sheikh Khalid stressed.
Ben Sulayem commented: “Sheikh Khalid is a true ambassador for the UAE in
motorsport. He has made us proud in the past and he continues to excel wherever
H.E Arif Hamad Al Awani said: “Today marks an important milestone for Sheikh
Khalid and Abu Dhabi Racing. We, at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, always back
excellence in sports. Sheikh Khalid is a true inspiration for the younger generation
of UAE drivers.”
Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi was second in the Dubai International Baja last year in
the Peugeot 2008 DKR (two-wheel drive) and then made a historic victory in the
Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge in the Peugeot 3008 DKR, winning the full double
points and gained the full points in class at the following round to lead the overall
standings of the FIA Cross Country Rallies Championship. However, Al Qassimi’s
commitment to the World Rally Championship (WRC) prevented him from
continuing the rest of the Cross-Country season, eventually, he was placed first in
the 2WD standings with 125 points.
