Dubai: Skydive Dubai Falcon racing Team take ‘Team Championship’ title in Bahrain
Sheikh Hasher Al Maktoum and Saeed Al Mehairi of the Skydive Dubai Falcon Racing Team rose to the occasion in the final round of the 2014-2015 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, at Bahrain International Circuit, to win the prestigious Team Championship despite arriving in the island kingdom trailing by eight points.
Supporting the grand prix at Sakhir on the weekend, the top drivers in the region battled it out over two rounds, which for the SkyDive Dubai backed duo were all important as they simply had to beat their Al Nabooda Racing rivals in both races to stand a chance of claiming the coveted crown.
In Race 1, Al Maktoum had an inspired drive to second place, with Al Mehairi crossing the line in fifth but most importantly the pair were ahead of the two Al Nabooda drivers Clemens Schmid who did not finish and Ahmad Al Harthy in sixth. Race one winner was Bandar Alesayi.
More was to come from the SkyDive Dubai pair in Race 2, the final race of the season, as Al Mehairi and Al Maktoum made no mistakes, working together to finish second and third respectively behind race winner Fahad Algosaibi. Once again the Emirati drivers did enough to lock-out the Al Nabooda drivers and with it claim the Team Championship title.
The pair also took top honours in the Silver category with Al Mehairi taking the crown ahead of Al Maktoum. The overall Championship title went to Clemens Schmid, with Zaid Ashkanani ending runner-up, Al Mehairi in third and Al Maktoum fourth.
Driver, Sheikh Hasher Al Maktoum: “This is a fantastic day for our young team. We arrived at the finale with an outside chance of the team title, but we stayed committed to the plan of winning this one for SkyDive Dubai who made this all possible and our partners who believed in us as a team. It gives us great pride to bring the trophy home to Dubai.”
Driver, Saeed Al Mehairi: “All season we said that the goal was to win the Team Championship and I am very pleased that we delivered on what we set out to achieve. It was a tough season, competing with top drivers, in the best and most professional racing series in the region. It was a team effort and we proved we can do despite the intense pressure. It will take a long time to wipe the smiles off our faces.”
Team Manager, Hadi Bloushi: “We dedicate this Team Championship victory to Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. We also thank SkyDive Dubai for their support, along with TAG Heuer and Corthay who cmbined to make this happen. It was a great team effort by Sheikh Hasher and Saeed who showed everyone that they are top line drivers. We have many people to thank, but we must remember Lechner Racing and the amazing job they have done to make this championship number one in the region.”
