UAE: Al Ghanem and Hirani fight for title in Formula Gulf decider this weekend
This Friday sees a serious showdown between four very talented young racing drivers fighting for the final three positions of the 2014/15 Formula Gulf 1000 Championship.
Ahmed Al Ghanem’s convincing double win at Yas Marina Circuit last month put huge pressure on Tejas Hirani as the gap closed to just 19 points.
With 57 points on offer at this event on the Dubai International Circuit neither driver can afford to play safe and they are both desperate to put a Championship win on their Racing CV and win the F3 test with leading GP2 team Campos Racing in Valencia.
Whilst Al Ghanem is looking to follow a professional career in single seaters, Hirani’s camp is currently trying to raise a budget to compete in RXLites, a support series to the World Rallycross Championship.
The fight between Mashhur Bal Hejaila and Yousuf Al Bader is even closer with Bal Hejaila just 5 points ahead. Given that Al Bader surprised both Al Ghanem and Hirani by setting the fastest lap of Round 11, Bal Hejaila is not going to find it easy to hang on to his slender lead. Fortunately, they will not have to contend with Omani racer Al Faisal Al Zubair who will be having his first race outing in an F4 car at Oulton Park.
“This is going to be a fascinating day” says GulfSport’s Martin Hope. “Because they get such intense coaching, and given that we give them identical cars and tyres, by the end of the season these young drivers are really starting to shine. At the last event the whole grid qualified within eight tenths of a second, and all of them were inside the lap record set the previous year. The Championship has been decided at the last event every year we have run it”.
Current Championship Points Position:
Al Ghanem 233
Bal Hejaila 136
Al Bader 131
Al Zubair 125
