Dubai: Zettanet Racing Team haul in a bag full of points at Yas Marina Circuit

Top step at Yas Marina Circuit for Jonathan and the ZRT Honda

Rounds 13&14 of the UAETCC at Yas Marina South Circuit were always going to be a shoot-out between the Top 3 racers (Alex Annivas, Rupesh Channake and ZRT’s Jonathan Mullan) and the day unfolded with drama galore.

Qualifying saw Zettanet Racing Team (ZRT) take pole position on the second row of the grid tucked in behind the Class 1 Seat of Costas Papantonas with Alex Annivas in 2nd place on row 3 and Rupesh in 3rd on row 4. The inclusion of the class 1 & 5 cars mixing up the grid.

Race 1 saw ZRT take the early lead until Rupesh made the move into turn 1 locked up, cut the corner and continued in 1st place (Potentially one for the Race stewards!). For another 13-laps both Hondas were inseparable running almost identical lap times. Unfortunately the Lap57 Honda suffered an electrical fault and pulled out of the race leaving the field open for ZRT to take the 20-pts with Annivas in 2nd and Simon Dennis coming home in 3rd.

Race 2 saw Annivas take an early lead in Lap 1 with a bold overtaking manoeuvre which is becoming his trademark into the marina section of the Yas South circuit. ZRT then closed the gap lap on lap when finally making the move on Lap 4 into turn 1. The pass was clean however turn 4 was overshot with too much speed and the ZRT car spun. 3 corners later the car spun again having seemingly no rear grip at all. 2 laps at 85% pace followed to allow the tyres to cool and then it was back to business to salvage a 3rd place and 15-pts.

A good day for the ZRT boys at Yas will now see the championship title being fought out on the final day at the Dubai Autodrome....

The day was summed up by Ian Rodgers of ZRT. “We came looking for Championship points and did that successfully. We are poised for a heart thumping end to the season and we know what is required to achieve our goal. Its close teamwork, support and dedicated people that make us strong”.

So into the final ‘double points’ round at Dubai Autodrome on 11th April and its ‘Ireland v Greece v Sri Lanka’ and ‘Honda v Renault’ to take the coveted Class 2 Championship. Its sure to be a nail biter so get down to the Autodrome on Friday the 11th April and support the Circuit Pro Digital backed ZRT Honda.
