UAE Formula Gulf 1000: Natasha Seatter takes blistering double win in Yas short track thriller

Race 1 podium, Natasha Seatter takes the win with Nick Canal in second and Rahul Mayer in third

Fri, Dec 7th 2012 – Formula Gulf 1000 ( ) the Middle East’s premiere single-seater championship moved to the amazing Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix for Rounds 3 & 4.

Testing on the North Circuit with the corkscrew link, not unlike the famous Brands Hatch Indy circuit in length, showed that driver’s lap times were extremely similar which would make for a couple of very exciting races. Friday morning saw Spanish driver Nick Canal on pole position with a lap just 0.0149 of a second better than Rahul Mayer who had flown in from Malaysia for the event. All drivers qualified within one and a half seconds.

Sharing the weekend with the Porsche GT3 Middle East Challenge, Round 3 got underway on Friday morning with Canal getting a great start, which was not the case for Mayer, or Emirati driver Haytham Sultan Al Ali who had qualified extremely well in third place. But it was not long before S.E. Asia’s fastest lady driver was closing on Canal, and Mayer had got past Sultan. Seatter made her move on lap 19 to take the lead which she held to finish just 2 seconds ahead of Canal followed by Mayer, Sultan, Saeed Bintouq and Harsh Rajpal. Fastest lap went to Seatter on lap 21.

With the grid for Round 4 based on the result of the previous race, Seatter made a blistering start to jump to an immediate and impressive racelead ahead of Canal and Mayer. But this time the supremely fit Mayer appeared to have the edge over 16 year old Canal and made his move to pass Canal andthen set off after Seatter. He closed the gap to less than 5 seconds setting the fastest lap time of the race on lap 21 in the process, to finish on thepodium in second place ahead of Canal, an impressive Bintouq, Sultan and Rajpal

Team Principal Barry Hope said “We always knew that if we gave drivers identical cars it would make them focus totally on their driving. So to see these youngsters all qualify within one and a half seconds was very satisfying. What’s more, they were lapping slightly quicker than the mighty GT3 Porsche racers. Natasha Seatter was under pressure but certainly knows how to put the hammer down when she has to. We are very proud of what is emerging here”!

Rounds 5 & 6 take place with the Dubai Motorsport Festival on 13th and 14th December on the GP Circuit.
