Al-Anabi Racing Dixon wins Top Fuel event at NHRA SuperNationals
41st Annual NHRA SuperNationals, Old Bridge Township Raceway Park; Englishtown, N.J.
Top Fuel Winner: Larry Dixon
Qualifying: Larry Dixon was the No. 3 qualifier at the NHRA SuperNationals in Englishtown, N.J. During the first qualifying session on Saturday, Dixon recorded a 3.814-second pass at 318.24 mph. Dixon has qualified in the top three at 10 of the 11 races so far this season.
Eliminations: Dixon defeated Steve Chrisman, Tony Schumacher, and Brandon Bernstein on Sunday. Persistent rain showers forced the finals to be postponed until this morning when Dixon defeated Antron Brown for his sixth win in the season’s first 11 races. It was Dixon’s sixth-career win at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park tying him with Joe Amato for the most Top Fuel wins at Englishtown.
Point Standings: With his second-round win over Tony Schumacher, Dixon became the first Top Fuel driver to clinch his place in the 2010 Countdown to One NHRA Playoffs. Dixon remains in first place in the NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings. He leads second-place Tony Schumacher by 199 points.
Dixon on Englishtown: “I was very happy for His Highness Sheik Khalid because so many of his cars did so well this weekend, and he was at the track yesterday. It was a shame we didn’t get to finish yesterday when he was at the track because it would have been great for him to see his team do so well.
“All around, it was a great weekend for the Al-Anabi Racing Team. We won, Del (Al-Anabi Funny Car driver Del Worsham) went to the finals, Frank Manzo won in Alcohol Funny Car, Von Smith beat Mike Castellana in Pro Mod, and Matt Smith made it to the semifinals in Pro Stock Bike so it was a great Al-Anabi weekend. With Sheik Khalid here yesterday and his father, the Emir of Qatar, watching the ESPN2 show from New York, it was a great weekend for the entire team.
“Trophies like these – what I call the majors – always shine a little brighter for me,” Dixon said about winning for the sixth time in his career at the historic track. “This race, Indy, Pomona, Gainesville, and even Columbus back then, you want to do well. I feel blessed to be able to race well on tracks like these.”
Funny Car Runner-Up: Del Worsham
Qualifying: Del Worsham was the No. 9 qualifier at the NHRA SuperNationals. During the first qualifying session on Saturday, Worsham recorded a 4.135-second pass at 306.88 mph.
Eliminations: Worsham defeated Cruz Pedregon, Robert Hight and Jack Beckman before Sunday’s weather delay. He lost to Bob Tasca in the final round of eliminations this morning.
Point Standings: Worsham moved up two places in points and is now in eighth place in the NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car point standings. He trails seventh-place Ron Capps by 72 points and leads ninth-place Tim Wilkerson by 19 points.
Worsham on Englishtown: “The Al-Anabi Toyota is running great, and we had great weekend at Englishtown. I now feel like we have a car that can compete every weekend, and that’s a good feeling. We didn’t get the win today, but we have another chance this weekend in Bristol, and I am really looking forward to this weekend. If our car continues to run the way it did in Englishtown, we definitely have a shot at putting the Al-Anabi Toyota in the winner’s circle this weekend in Bristol.”
Next Race: The Al-Anabi Racing team will be back in action June 18-20 at the 10th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. For additional information, please visit www.nhra.com
